Layers of your Problem

 80% of the world’s population:

-       will have back pain at some point

-       has had back pain

-       currently has back pain.

Which category are you?

For many, this is not the first layer or injury and therefore, the process of restoration or rejuvenation can only take place when you peel back the historical layers of your condition. A bit like slowly peeling back the layers of an onion; to see what damage appears on the layer beneath.

To understand this further, let’s discuss these layers that make up a person’s condition:

1)    Acute Problem

From the first point of injury, the first layer develops. Acute injuries, depending on the extent of the injury, will take the body a week or two to try to heal. If effective care is provided and full healing does occur, there is not much chance of sub-acute issues forming.

1)    Sub-acute Problem

Each subsequent re-injury leads to further development and another layer being added to the existing problem. Sub-acute problems do not fully heal correctly. They wait, concealed under the surface (like an iceberg) for you to re-activate the condition. In the case of back pain, this is often as simple as a cough or sneeze; lifting something awkwardly; a simple innocent movement, and the back pain episode will raise its ugly head again. These episodes then occur more and more frequently and intensively, taking longer to subside as they change from a sub-acute condition to a chronic condition.  Sub-acute problems can take anything from 3 to 6 months, of a proper chiropractic rehabilitation program, to correct.

2)    Chronic Problems

Once the re-injuries and extra layers have piled up, it now becomes evident that damage has already been done to the spine, muscles, discs, joints, bones and nerves. Chronic issues ensue, causing constant pain. This pain also frequently interferes, hinders or limits certain activities of daily living. It vastly impacts on the day to day happiness of your life. It has taken years for these symptoms to build up the layers. It will take many months of detailed Chiropractic work and adjustment, to try to free you from, or limit your pain. Unfortunately, the chance of total correction is poor. Preventing further degeneration of the condition and maintaining quality of life will now have to become the goal.

1)    Degenerative Problems

It is sad to note that ineffective treatment(s), not following through with treatment(s) and/or delaying treatment(s) often becomes a further cause of degenerative disease. Layer upon layer rapidly builds up, destroying the structure and function of the body, involving multiple systems at the same time. Remember, in the spine, each vertebrae supplies a different nerve to each and every part of the body. Therefore, degeneration of the spine often runs hand in hand with additional organ and system failures elsewhere in the body. Minimizing the extent of degeneration becomes optimum, at this point, and offering quality of life improvement, becomes the goal. You don’t have to give up any hope of a better, pain reduced life, Chiropractic care has proven to be very successful in degenerative conditions –BUT only if the patient is prepared to put in the time and effort.
